MEKEDATU WEEKENDS

In Kannada, Mekedatu means “Goat’s Leap”. According to the legends, once there was a goat being chased by a tiger. While running, the goat came to this end, where, to save itself, it leapt across the gorge. The tiger was not willing to take the risk, and hence, turned back. The locals here believe that the ‘goat’ in the story was none other than Lord Shiva. Legend has it that the two hoof-shaped dents on the earth there are the prints left by this goat. There is a lot of mythological significance also to this place (both Sangama and Mekedatu.) Upstream on the Kaveri is the famous Shivasamudram Falls, the second biggest waterfall in India and the sixteenth largest in the world. Around 5 km before Sangama is a waterfall on the river Arkavathi.

Mekedatu (Goats Leap)
Mekedatu is a lovely spot along Kaveri in Bangalore rural district. Sangama is the place where Arkavati merges with Kaveri. Mekedatu means goat's leap in Kannada. River Kaveri flows into a deep and narrow gorge, so narrow that a goat could leap over it and that is how it got its name.
